State-by-State Nonprofit Filing Extensions Due to COVID-19

The following is a list of filing extensions for nonprofit organizations announced thus far in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Additional state listings and updates will be added to this page as they are announced. Please stay tuned for further information as it becomes available.

California

The Registry of Charitable Trusts has announced that it will accept all IRS extensions for annual charitable renewal filing deadlines which may now be completed online. Additional extension requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For more information, please visit the registry’s website: https://oag.ca.gov/charities.

Colorado

The Colorado Secretary of State has issued emergency rules extending charitable renewal filing deadlines until August 15, 2020. This extension is for renewal initially due between April 1 and July 15, 2020. Please note that this extension does not affect the filing deadline for new solicitation notices, which must be filed at least 15 days prior to the commencement of a solicitation campaign. Florida

While Florida has not issued an extension related to the current pandemic, organizations may request the usual 180-day extension for filing of their financial statement only. Maryland

The Maryland Secretary of State has extended all charitable registrations renewals that are due while a state of emergency is in existence. The charitable solicitation renewals will be extended until 30 days following the end of the state of emergency. Massachusetts

The Non-Profit Organizations/Public Charities Division is extending the filing deadlines for all annual charities filings for fiscal year 2019 by six months. This extension is in addition to the automatic six-month extensions granted to charities upon request. Because of the disruptions caused by the pandemic, the division will now accept photocopies of signatures and e-signatures in addition to original signatures for fiscal 2019 filings. Minnesota

The Attorney General in Minnesota has issued an automatic four-month extension for charitable renewal filings that were initially due between April 15 and Jul 15, 2020.For more information, see the Attorney General’s website: https://www.ag.state.mn.us/Charity/InfoCharitableorgandTrusts.asp.

New York

The Attorney General’s Charities Bureau is granting an automatic six-month charitable renewal filing registration for organization’s whose filing deadline was originally after February 15, 2020.Please note the bureau normally also grants an automatic six-month extension to charities required to file an annual financial report with the Charities Bureau. Ohio

The Ohio Attorney General's Office has automatically extended the final annual report filing deadline for organizations with a FYE of June 2019 from May 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020. Annual report filing deadlines for organizations with a FYE of July 2019 have also been extended to July 15, 2020. Oregon

The Oregon Department of Justice Charitable Activities Section has automatically extended the due dates for the CT-12/CT-12F/CT-12S annual financial reports. Reports that were or are due between March 15, 2020 and July 15, 2020 are now due by August 15, 2020. Additional extension requests must be submitted prior to the August 15, 2020 filing deadline. Pennsylvania

The Department of State has extended by three months all charitable renewal deadlines for organizations whose renewal were due between April and June 2020. Tennessee

While Tennessee has not issued a specific filing extension related to the pandemic.Organization’s may request the standard ninety-day filing extension if necessary. For more information, please visit the Secretary of States’ website: https://sos.tn.gov/charitable/charitable-organizations-forms.
