DANIEL A. HERSHEY

Daniel A. Hershey provides senior paralegal services to nonprofit and philanthropic clients and manages the firm's operations. He is a primary point of contact for clients and, since 2005, has provided paralegal services in the areas of nonprofit formation, incorporation, bylaw development and review, public charity and private foundation applications for 501(c)(3) status with the IRS, public charity status and public support calculations, and state and federal compliance.

Dan strives to help his clients succeed by attending to the legal and administrative needs and challenges that confront nonprofit managers on a daily basis. "At Hurwit & Associates, we focus on our clients' legal and organizational needs so that they can focus on their charitable mission. Our reward is seeing clients grow and flourish, maximizing their positive impact on society."

In addition to his direct client work, Dan directs the day-to-day operations of Hurwit & Associates. He focuses his efforts on long-term strategies for the firm including business development, personnel and workflow management, and strategic relationships with other nonprofit professionals, associations, and service providers.

Dan's work is informed by his career in the nonprofit sector which spans more than twenty years and includes experience at all levels of nonprofit organizations. In 2022, Dan served on the Massachusetts Attorney General's Online Charities Advisory Group, helping them develop their online portal for statutorily required filings. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Wilkinson Young Singers Fund, a scholarship fund for young singers, established in 2020 to honor the memory and legacy of the prolific baritone, teacher, and musician Donald R. Wilkinson. He has served as a volunteer for the Massachusetts Audubon Society and the Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress and as a Trustee for the First Baptist Church in Newton. He was a Development Associate and System Administrator for Boston Lyric Opera where his responsibilities encompassed the coordination of fund raiser mailings, maintenance of the donor database, oversight of the local computer network, conversion to a new network configuration, user support for proprietary ticketing and development software, and the recommendation, purchase and installation of hardware and software upgrades.

Previously, Dan was a staff consultant for Andersen Consulting where he worked on a conversion project for a major defense contractor that migrated a five million record database into an integrated and customized bill of material and work order system. Other work included similar migration projects for two major consumer products companies.

Daniel Hershey received a M.M. degree in vocal performance from New England Conservatory with academic honors in 1999, and a B.A., summa cum laude, from the University of Rochester in Mathematics in 1992. He has sung professionally, performing in the United States and abroad with organizations such as the Boston Camerata, Emmanuel Music, and other local and regional ensembles.
