
DAVID J. CHUSED
David Chused is an experienced 501(c)(3) tax attorney with strong analytical, strategic, communication, and interpersonal skills, and deep expertise in higher education, philanthropy, and planned giving. For more than twenty years, he served as legal counsel on resource development and tax matters at two of the world’s leading research universities, following nearly two decades in major law firm practice. He is a trusted, insightful counselor who combines technical knowledge with practical judgment to help clients address immediate challenges and long-term goals.
Most recently, as Assistant Vice President at Brandeis University, David worked closely with senior leadership to develop and implement the University’s advancement program and gift acceptance policy, with a focus on the strategic, legal, and technical aspects of fundraising. He also routinely negotiated and facilitated complex charitable gifts, working with high-net-worth donors and their advisors to help meet their philanthropic goals and advance institutional endowment priorities.
As counsel to the Treasurer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a member of its Office of General Counsel, David advised on legal matters involving the Institute’s charitable giving program, tax-exempt status, subsidiary entities, tax filings, tax-exempt financings, and retirement plans. At MIT, he also played a central role in structuring and documenting complex domestic and international charitable gifts and advised on fundraising strategies for individual donors, corporations, and foundations.
David earned an LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University, a J.D. from Albany Law School, and a B.A. from Union College.
